HIFUMI SHIMOYAMA was born in 1930 in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, at the northern end of Honshu, the chief island of Japan. He graduated from Hirosaki University and moved to Tokyo at the age of twenty-five. He studied composition with Yoritsune Matsudaira. His music has often been featured on World Music Days festivals sponsored by the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM). REFLECTION, Hamburg 1969 FUMON II, Paris 1975 BREATH, Helsinki 1977 SAIKYO (CHROMOPHONY), Tel Aviv 1979 ICHIGO NO TSUKIKAGE, Oslo 1990 VOICES, Warsaw 1992 SHINKYO (DEEP SOUND), Yokohama 2001 The composer has also received many prizes and awards. In Japan, his works CHROMOPHONY, Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra and TRANSMIGRATION received high awards in the Agency for Cultural Affairs' Arts Festival. In 1972 REFLECTION, BREATH and EXORCISM were all selected for the 4th International Composition Contest sponsored by the Italian branch of the ISCM. In 1982 HALLEY'S COMET, commissioned by NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), received the Gian Franco Zaffrani Prize at the 34th Prix Italia. |
